Port Dover

Population 5,527 (GPS N 42°46'55.6" / W 80°12'04.7")

The port's name is derived from Dover, England. In the early 1800s, Daniel McQueen began severing lots for the village of Dover Mills about two miles north of Lake Erie. The village burned in 1814, during an American attack, but was rebuilt. Over the next century and a half, Port Dover became well known for its commercial fishing industry and greenhouses of roses, the latter closing in the late 20 th Century. Tourism and hospitality have long been a strong industry in Port Dover.

Today, this picturesque port town has an edgy feel that attracts all ages and walks of life, especially those craving an Arbor hot dog or an afternoon at the beach. The pier is a focal point for anglers, couples in love, and seniors watching the fishing tugs return with their catches. Lighthouse Festival Theatre enjoys record crowds each season, and the restaurants are filled with tourists and locals enjoying Lake Erie perch, pickerel and other favourites. Boaters love the Port Dover Harbour Marina. Unique to the town is the vibrant Port Dover Harbour Museum, which never fails to intrigue its visitors, as well as numerous shoppes. Many accommodations are available. Annual events include the Polar Bear Plunge on New Year's Day, Perch Derby (April-May), PD 13 (every Friday the 13th), Lake Erie Interclub Cruise (June), Canada Day (July), Fish Fest (July) and Summer Fest (August).
