Do you love the new accessible beach mat in Port Dover? Norfolk County welcomes visitors of all backgrounds – and wants to be accessible to anyone with disabilities.
We asked people to tell us about someone in their life who will benefit from the Port Dover Beach Mat – and what else they enjoy doing in Norfolk County.
Sarah M. was the lucky winner of a $25 gift certificate from The Barrel Restaurant. Thanks to all who entered!
The man responsible for making the Port Dover Beach Mat happen is Peter Knechtel of The Beach House Restaurant. He remembered how his late father Fred Knechtel became disabled and could no longer access the beach – a place that he loved to visit. Peter approached Norfolk County with the idea last summer, and with help from the municipality’s staff and Accessibility Advisory Committee – plus funding from the federal government – the mat was installed this spring.
The Port Dover Beach Mat is already a hit! Almost 3,500 people have liked it on Norfolk Tourism’s facebook page (including almost 600 loves) and about 480 people have commented positively about it.
