Kids are back at school, the September routine is slowly shaping up and we often forget an important person in our own schedule…. OURSELF!
It tends to be easier to schedule everyone else’s activities into the routine. We make sure our kids are signed up for sports, music and whatever else they are into but what about US??
In order to be healthy, happy and available emotionally for our family, it is so important to allow some time for ourselves.
Exercising is good for our kids and it is definitely awesome for us too. Perhaps you already love working out and have a great routine already in place or maybe you are dreading adding fitness into your life…
Having a fitness routine does not have to be limited to a gym workout. What if you could have fun exploring new areas in Norfolk County while exercising? Sound doable?
I seriously think that walking is the best exercise. It does wonders for your physical and your emotional health. Start small, go for 15 mins each day at the beginning and increase the length as you get stronger. Walking around your neighbourhood is an easy way to get started or choose to hit a trail! The Lynn Valley Trail is favorite spot for my morning walk. Catch the gravel rail trail in Port Dover or Simcoe with many trailheads in between. The Waterford Heritage Trail is also very scenic and worth checking out if you are in the area. You will not be disappointed with the trail network in Norfolk, check out this link to discover where you can walk and hike in the area.
Riding a bike is a great way to be active. It’s easy on the knees and a good way to improve your cardiac health. Again, start with roads near your home or find a trail to challenge yourself. If you are unsure what kind of bicycle you need, talk to one of our local biker providers! I know that you will love to hear their passion for biking and they will help you find a bike that works for your life. In Port Dover, talk to Scot at North Shores Athletics, visit Ontario South Coast Bicycle & Tours in Port Ryerse or if you think that mountain biking may be your thing, reach out to Paul from Elevation Mountain Bike and Coaching. Each vendor will allow you to try a bike before you can make a decision and they will share some of Norfolk best kept secrets for biking locations.
If you do not enjoy riding alone, join one of Norfolk County’s many clubs! Silver Spokes Cycling is a good way to connect with other road biking enthusiasts. The Turkey Point Mountain Bike Club hosts weekly rides for all levels in the Turkey Point trails and always welcome new members.
Getting in the water is a fun way to increase your fitness level. At the Annaleise Carr Aquatic Centre in Simcoe, you will find an array of swimming programs. Choose the Lengths & Leisure time if you have some experience swimming lengths. Sign up for Aqua Fit most days of the week to be guided through a workout or even try some Aqua Yoga on Wednesdays. Being in the water is fantastic for your joints and is excellent if you are recovering from an injury. What an exciting way to get moving this fall!
Norfolk County has a great selection of clubs and groups that can help you get fit this season. Check out the InNorfolk Guide for more details. Badminton, roller derby, pickleball, curling and so many more activities are available to you in this community. Stop the excuses and find something that works for your life.
