I write this blog feeling a bit overwhelmed, as I have just returned from the 10th Annual SoupART Bowls event at the Norfolk Arts Centre. Overwhelmed because I cannot believe that this is my first time attending and by the amazing support from the community for such an incredible event, but isn’t that just the Norfolk way?
Our county has a way of doing things that just promotes togetherness. Where else could you get almost a dozen local chefs in one building serving up delicious soup to people while they walk around with gorgeous handmade ceramic bowls crafted by artists also in the community? This just seems to be what we do: we create reasons to come together, eat together, create together, and exist together in order to help those around us and each other.
Don’t believe me? Let’s look at just a handful of the amazing events Norfolk County has to offer:
- SoupArt Bowls
- Eat and Drink Norfolk
- The Norfolk County Fair and Horse Show
- The Lions shows in all the local towns
- Any of the various local “fests”
- Community Theatre shows
- Norfolk Has Talent
- Art Battles
- Orchard Affair
- Feast in the Street
And the list goes on and on.
It’s this very reason that many of us go off to College or University, see what the cities have to offer, and find our way back home, because there really is “no folk like Norfolk”. It is a place to grow, to help, to eat, drink, and be merry. If I have to eat soup all night, take home some beautifully handcrafted art, and have a bunch of great laughs with my students in order to help out the community, then you don’t have to twist my arm, I’m all in and I’m glad the rest of you are too, because we couldn’t do it without each other.
